HENDERSON, Nev. – Henderson Libraries will celebrate the grand opening of its newest branch, the Galleria Library, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 28 at the Galleria at Sunset – located on the corner of Sunset Road and Stephanie Street in Henderson at 1300 W. Sunset Road.


The grand opening festivities will include surprise celebrity readers and costumed characters sponsored by Cox Communications. The event is open to people of all ages and families. It will also act as the kick-off event for Nevada Reading Week, which officially takes place March 2-9.


The first 300 children to attend the grand opening will receive a “Cat in the Hat” hat, and adults will receive a free paperback book while supplies last. Arts and crafts, drawings for mall gift bags and cookies will be available throughout the event. Author Kevin Janison will read his new book and autograph copies at 1 p.m. Stories will be read to children starting at 10 a.m.


The Galleria Library at the Galleria at Sunset is one of two branches Henderson Libraries is opening in 2009. (The district’s recently acquired Green Valley Library will open in April 2009 after undergoing renovations.)


The Galleria at Sunset offered the district a 1,300-square-foot space at an affordable rate to use for checking out popular bestsellers and high interest books. The branch will also have a space for family literacy programming that focuses on pre-kindergarten literacy skills. Wi-fi Internet access will be provided within the branch and can be accessed in the mall within a range of approximately 300 feet. The Galleria Family Branch will also be used as the pick-up location for requested material.


Established in 1943 as a single library in Downtown Henderson, Henderson Libraries now offers five locations throughout Henderson and cooperates with other public libraries in Southern Nevada, the Nevada System of Higher Education, the Clark County School District and all other libraries around the state to provide quality service for Nevada’s residents.
